Remote Unlock for Bosch MDG1 2020+, Without Opening the ECU

Owners of new-generation BMWs (built after July 2020) have hit a barrier that seemed impossible to get past: the new protection on Bosch ECUs (MG1/MD1). This barrier does not allow the software to be written using the classic methods. At AMC Motorsport Brasov, we offer the official solution through our partnership with AutoTuner, the world leader in tuning equipment.

The challenge: why can't the new BMWs be remapped locally?

Starting from 06.2020, BMW introduced an extremely high level of security. The only safe and stable way to unlock these units is through direct work by the engineers at the AutoTuner headquarters (Luxembourg).

How does the workflow at AMC Motorsport work?

To guarantee the complete safety of your car, we have adopted the official workflow:

  1. Diagnostics and removal: The car comes to our premises in Brasov, where we check its technical condition and remove the ECU.
  2. Secure shipping: We send the ECU by express courier to the central AutoTuner laboratory in Luxembourg.
  3. The unlock: The AutoTuner engineers carry out the hardware unlock of the unit. This is the only method that then allows custom maps to be written. In most cases the ECU does not need to be opened.
  4. Custom remap at AMC: Once the unlocked unit comes back to us, we fit it to the car and start the remap through the diagnostic port. Our tuning is adapted specifically to the conditions and the fuel in Romania.
  5. Testing on our Bapro BPA-2R HP dyno: We finish the project with precise measurements on the dyno, to make sure the performance meets your expectations.

Which models are affected?

This process is needed for almost all BMW models (G-Series) and the Toyota Supra built after July 2020, which use the new generations of Bosch ECUs.

Why choose this process?

Although it involves a wait of a few days (for transport), this is the only correct way to get performance from a new BMW without compromising the reliability of the control unit.
