How much does chiptuning cost in 2026? A complete price guide

If you searched Google for "chiptuning price", you are in the right place. The question we get most often, before anything else, is simple: "How much does it cost?". And it is a fair question. The problem is that most answers on the internet are either evasive ("it depends") or bait prices that double once you reach the workshop.

At AMC Motorsport we believe in transparent prices. Below you will find our indicative rates for 2026 (prices in RON, the Romanian leu), plus an honest explanation of what affects the cost, so you understand exactly what you are paying for and why a cheap chiptune is never really cheap.

Chiptuning price 2026, car on the Bapro dyno at AMC Motorsport Brasov

Chiptuning price 2026: full AMC Motorsport Brasov price table

Service What it includes Price from
Stage 1 ECU Software only, no hardware modifications 1,499 RON
COMBO Stage 1 (ECU + TCU) Engine + automatic gearbox software, with a 499 RON discount on the gearbox 2,499 RON
Stage 2 For cars with hardware upgrades price in the configurator, where available
Eco Tuning Optimisation to reduce fuel consumption 999 RON
Stage 1 TCU remap Automatic gearbox only, no engine work from 1,499 RON
Dyno power test (standalone) Measurement on the dyno only, no tuning 350 RON
Extended session Racing projects / Stage 2+ from 500 RON

Prices are indicative. The final cost depends on the ECU type, the complexity of the engine and the level of optimisation (see below). For the exact price for your car, use our configurator or ask for a quote.

Why does the price vary from one car to another?

There is no single price for "a chiptune", because not every project needs the same amount of work. Three factors set the cost:

1. The ECU type. Some ECUs can be read and programmed directly through the OBD port. Others (more and more of them on new cars) are protected and need to be removed and physically opened, with work on the bench (bench / BDM). That means more time, specialised equipment and higher risk, so a higher cost.

2. The complexity of the engine. A simple naturally aspirated engine does not need the same calibration as a bi-turbo or a hybrid system. The more variables there are to control (boost pressure, injection, recirculation), the finer the mapping work.

3. The level of optimisation. A software Stage 1 is different from a Stage 2 with hardware modifications, and Eco Tuning has a different goal from a maximum performance project.

How much does a Stage 1 cost?

Stage 1 ECU starts from 1,499 RON. It is the most popular option and means software optimisation, with no hardware modification at all. You get more power, optimal torque at low revs and better throttle response, within safe limits for your engine.

For cars with an automatic gearbox (DSG, ZF, S tronic), we recommend the COMBO Stage 1 package (ECU + TCU), from 2,499 RON, with a 499 RON discount on the gearbox compared with buying the two separately: we optimise both the engine and the gearbox, so that gear changes are faster and smoother, and the extra torque is handled correctly and safely.

For projects with hardware modifications (intake, downpipe, intercooler), Stage 2 is priced individually. Prices are shown directly in the configurator where they are available for your engine.

Want to see real gains on specific models? We have figures measured on the dyno for VW, Audi and Skoda, 2.0 TDI, 2.0 TSI and 1.5 TSI, plus case studies such as BMW 330e: from 292 to 400 HP.

This is one of the most searched questions, so we answer it directly: for the vast majority of common diesel and petrol engines (2.0 TDI, 1.6 TDI, 1.9 TDI, 1.5 TSI, 2.0 TSI), a Stage 1 ECU remap starts from 1,499 RON, when the ECU can be programmed without removal.

Price differences appear on engines with a protected ECU (which need work on the bench), on bi-turbo, hybrid or latest-generation engines, where calibration is more complex.

The good news: you no longer have to guess. Our configurator now has updated prices for every engine: you choose your make, model and engine and see the exact price straight away, without waiting for a quote. No surprises, no "it depends". And if this is not your first car modified at AMC Motorsport, or if you have at least 2 cars you want us to work on (friends usually recommend other friends), you will also qualify for a discount.

How much does a dyno test cost?

A standalone power test costs from 350 RON and means 2 runs on our Bapro BPA-2R HP dyno, with a detailed graph and a full report. If you have your car chiptuned with us, the before & after dyno measurement is included in the package, and you receive the overlaid graphs, so you can see exactly the real gain, not an estimate. Full details on the Dyno Test page.

The advantages of tuning measured on the dyno

The dyno is not a whim, it is the difference between "we think it runs well" and "we know exactly how much it gained". When you pay for chiptuning, the dyno guarantees you four things:

  • Real figures, not estimates. You see the power and torque measured before and after optimisation, on the overlaid graphs, concrete proof that you got what you paid for.
  • Safety for the engine. Under controlled load on the dyno, hidden problems come to light: unstable boost, a "tired" air flow meter, a clogged DPF, before they turn into expensive repairs. We have written in detail about what we find on the dyno before a remap.
  • Fine calibration, based on how the engine really behaves. The mapping is adjusted to how your car actually responds, not to a generic file written for another car.
  • Price transparency. You pay for a measured and documented result, not for a promise. The dyno report stays with you.

What do you actually get for this money?

This is the difference between a serious chiptune and a generic file loaded in 10 minutes. On every project, the price includes:

  • Reading the original software and saving it (backup), before any work.
  • Individual calibration, not an "off-the-shelf" file, adapted to your engine and your driving style.
  • Measurement on the dyno, before and after, under controlled conditions.
  • A report with the real figures (HP / Nm) and the measured differences.
  • Free DPF / AdBlue / EGR diagnostics, so we start from a healthy car.

Why a cheap chiptune is best avoided

A generic file, loaded without measurement and without calibration, can look like a bargain, until you get higher fuel consumption than there should be, smoke, error codes or, in bad cases, premature wear. Correct optimisation is not just "more horses"; it is more usable torque, safely, while keeping long-term reliability. You pay once, correctly, instead of paying twice.

How to find the exact price for your car

When you compare chiptuning quotes, the right price is the one confirmed for your car, not a generic "from". The simplest way: use our configurator: it has updated prices for every engine, so you choose your make, model and engine and immediately see the exact price and what we can do. Prefer to talk to a person? Write to us directly with your car's details (model, engine, power) and we will confirm the quote, usually within 6 hours at most.

Frequently asked questions about chiptuning prices

How much does a Stage 1 chiptune cost in 2026?

At AMC Motorsport, a Stage 1 ECU remap starts from 1,499 RON (software only, no hardware modifications). The final price depends on the ECU type and the complexity of the engine.

What is the price difference between Stage 1 and Stage 1 + TCU?

Stage 1 ECU (from 1,499 RON) optimises the engine only. The COMBO Stage 1 package (ECU + TCU), from 2,499 RON, also includes optimisation of the automatic gearbox (DSG / ZF), for a next-level driving experience.

Why does the price differ from one car to another?

Three factors: the ECU type (some need removal and work on the bench), the complexity of the engine (bi-turbo, hybrid) and the level of optimisation chosen (Stage 1 vs Stage 2).

Does the price include the dyno test?

Yes. If you have your car chiptuned with us, the before & after dyno measurement is included. A standalone power test, without tuning, costs from 350 RON.

How much does Eco Tuning cost?

Eco Tuning, optimised to reduce fuel consumption, starts from 999 RON.

How much does a remap of the automatic gearbox only (TCU) cost?

A Stage 1 TCU remap, with no work on the engine, costs from 1,499 RON.
