Why we refuse to give you Pops & Bangs (even though you would pay us)

Pops and bangs, a melted catalytic converter and a destroyed turbo on the AMC Motorsport workbench

An open letter to the Pops & Bangs generation

Dear pops & bangs generation,

We are writing to you from the workshop, not from an armchair. We are people who have spent 17 years among turbos, ECUs and dynos. We love cars at least as much as you do: that is why we made a business out of it.

And precisely because we love cars, we have to tell you something you will not hear in the clips with millions of views: pops and bangs is not tuning. It is self-destruction with a cool sound.

Every week we get messages: "How much to give me pops and bangs?". And every week we refuse. Not because we do not know how: it is one of the simplest software changes there is. We refuse because we know exactly what comes next. And you deserve to know the truth before you pay twice: once for the "fireworks", the second time for the turbo.

What pops and bangs actually is

Those bangs from the exhaust are not the car's "personality". They are fuel burned in the wrong place.

Technically, a pops & bangs calibration does two things when you lift your foot off the throttle: it retards the ignition (sometimes by tens of degrees) and it keeps fuel injection going where the original software would cut it completely. The result: the mixture no longer burns in the cylinder, where it belongs, but finishes burning in the exhaust manifold, in the turbo and along the exhaust system.

Every "bang" you hear is, literally, an explosion taking place next to the most expensive and most sensitive part of your engine.

What is left after pops and bangs: a melted catalytic converter and a compromised turbo

What happens in the engine with every bang

The turbo. The turbine blades are designed for exhaust gases, not for flame fronts. Exhaust gas temperature (EGT) jumps sharply with every retarded combustion, and the thermal and pressure shocks fatigue the material. It does not crack today. It cracks 10,000-20,000 km later, just after you have forgotten where it all started.

The catalytic converter and the GPF. The ceramic core of the catalytic converter melts at the temperatures produced by combustion in the exhaust. A clogged or melted catalytic converter means lost power, a failed ITP (periodic technical inspection) and a replacement part that costs as much as 3-4 remaps done properly.

The exhaust valves and the manifold. The combustion that "escapes" from the cylinder heats the valve seats and the manifold beyond what they were designed to take. Cracked manifolds and burnt valves: we see them on cars that come in for diagnostics after a cheap "tune" done somewhere else.

The probes and sensors. The lambda and EGT sensors live in that inferno. They die first, and they die expensively.

"But the Hyundai i30N and the A45 AMG have pops from the factory!" Correct. They have a homologated version: discreet, active only in certain modes, calibrated on hardware sized for it (manifolds, valves and exhaust designed from scratch) and put through thousands of hours of endurance testing. What is sold on Insta for 300 lei (RON) is not that. It is the "let's see what happens" version.

What the law says (and the police in the car park)

Let's be honest: we know where these bangs are heard. In car parks, at night, in town.

In 2026, noise above the legal limit and non-homologated devices on the exhaust lead to a fine and the withholding of the registration certificate until the problem is fixed, which means until you go through RAR (the Romanian vehicle registry). Operations in the big cities have become regular: in a single night, tens of thousands of lei in fines were issued for modified exhausts. And a car with pops and bangs software and noise above the limit has no chance at a properly conducted technical inspection.

It is not "the system against enthusiasts". It is the difference between passion and noise.

What we recommend instead (from people who actually do tuning)

If you want your car to be special, there is a route that does not end at the repair shop:

Real, measured power. An individually calibrated Stage 1 gives you 20-30% more power and torque, on the dyno sheet, not on stories. That is something you feel every day, not just in the car park.

Sound, if you want sound. There are homologated sports exhausts, with valves, that sound excellent and leave you with the registration certificate in your pocket.

Respect for the engine. Our calibrations go through datalogging and checks on the Bapro dyno. No gratuitous "bang", no compromise on reliability. That is why we can stand behind what leaves our workshop gate.

With affection, from the dyno,
The AMC Motorsport Brasov team
17 years of tuning. 3000+ dyno projects. Zero pops & bangs.

P.S. If you already have pops and bangs software and the car has started showing signs, come in for free diagnostics. No lectures, we promise. We look at the logs, tell you the real condition and how to get back to a healthy calibration.
