ZF 8HP automatic gearbox tuning
Tuning the ZF 8HP gearbox is the next step, an upgrade to the driving experience: faster shifts, more direct response, a Sport mode that holds boost better. If you have Stage 1 and want to take everything to the next level, gearbox tuning is the most enjoyable improvement you can add.
- Torque limitersModified, so the gearbox transmits the new torque
- Improved shift timesFaster shifts in Sport and Sport+ mode, similar to the M Performance models
- Gear displayThe current gear (D1, D2, S1, S2) shown directly on the dashboard, even in the normal automatic modes
- Optimised shift pointsThe gearbox no longer lugs the engine in Comfort mode, avoiding premature timing chain wear, and keeps the engine speed optimal
What to watch for on a BMW
What every owner should know about their engine, before and after tuning. We check these during diagnostics and tell you openly what we found, even if it has nothing to do with the remap.
BMW N47: the timing chain
The chain sits at the back of the engine and can stretch. The first sign is chain noise on a cold start. It is worth checking before any torque increase, because replacing it is a big job.
BMW N57: the EGR and the particulate filter
The EGR and the particulate filter clog up, especially on short trips. A choked engine cannot show what it can do on the dyno either, so we check them during diagnostics before calibration.
BMW B47 and B57: the EGR cooler
The EGR cooler was the subject of a BMW recall campaign, but not every car has had it done. It can be checked quickly by chassis number.
BMW B48: oil level and oil leaks
The oil filter housing can develop small leaks, which first show up as a dropping oil level. An engine that is losing oil is not a good candidate for more torque until it is repaired.

BMW chiptuning in short
Can chiptuning be done on a BMW G Series 2020+?
Yes. Since July 2020, BMW has locked software writing on the Bosch MG1 and MD1 ECUs. We unlock them in the workshop, without opening the ECU and at no extra cost, then do the remap the same day.
Can I go back to the original software on a BMW?
Yes. We keep your BMW's original software in our archive with no time limit. Going back is free when it is done through the diagnostic port. If your BMW's ECU can only be written on the bench or in boot mode, or has to be removed, the labour is charged.
Can the ZF 8HP gearbox handle Stage 1?
Yes. In our experience, the ZF 8HP handles Stage 1 without problems, with no changes to the gearbox. Gearbox tuning is not a requirement for Stage 1, it is an upgrade: the gearbox no longer cuts torque, it shifts faster, and the line pressure is adapted to the new torque. It costs from 1,499 RON, and in the COMBO Stage 1 ECU + TCU package you get 499 RON off the final price.
What extras do I get with Stage 1 or Stage 2 on a BMW?
On request, we calibrate the iDrive sport display free of charge so it shows the new power and torque values, and we can raise the speed limiter.
How long does chiptuning take on a BMW?
On average 1.5-2 hours, including diagnostics and the dyno measurement before and after. When the ECU has to be read on the bench or unlocked, it can take longer; we tell you when you make the booking.
What happens to the BMW warranty?
If the car is still under warranty, the manufacturer's warranty may be affected for the engine and transmission if the dealer detects the modification. We discuss the risks and options beforehand, and the original software stays saved so you can return to stock at any time. Our calibration comes with 24 months of technical support. Details on the FAQ page.
Which BMW engines do you work on?
Most diesel, petrol and hybrid engines, from the N47 and N57 to the B47, B48, B57 and B58. The exact figures for your engine are in the configurator on this page.
