Eco Tuning
The same engine. The same fuel. Up to 15% lower fuel consumption, with no compromise on reliability. Professional ECU optimisation, measured on the dyno.
Your engine uses more fuel than it needs to
Car manufacturers calibrate the factory ECU to satisfy dozens of markets, dozens of fuel types and emissions standards from all over the world at the same time. The result is ultra-conservative software, optimised for a global average, not for the real conditions you drive in.
Eco Tuning is the process in which AMC Motorsport's specialists recalibrate your vehicle's ECU software, removing the excessive safety margins set at the factory and giving the engine cleaner, more complete and more efficient combustion.
This is not about increasing power. It is about thermal intelligence: the same energy extracted from less fuel.
"The factory calibrates the ECU for average global conditions. We calibrate it for your car, in the conditions you actually drive in."
Unlike a simple performance tune (Stage 1/Stage 2), Eco Tuning does not aim for maximum power. It aims for the optimum efficiency point: where the air-fuel ratio, injection timing and turbo pressure work together for complete combustion with minimum fuel consumption. See the real gains measured on the 2.0 TDI, 2.0 TSI and 1.5 TSI.
The process is 100% reversible. The original ECU file is saved before any work is done.
What we change in the ECU
Eco Tuning does not mean a single adjustment. It means recalibrating several interdependent maps in the engine management software, with surgical precision, within safe mechanical limits.
Injection timing
The exact moment fuel is injected into the cylinder is advanced to allow more complete combustion. The fuel burns more efficiently → less fuel is needed for the same engine effort.
Turbo pressure
On turbocharged engines, boost pressure is optimised in the cruising range. The air entering the cylinder is maximised at low loads → complete combustion with a minimum amount of fuel.
Air-fuel ratio (λ)
Lambda (λ), the value that expresses how rich or lean the mixture is, is calibrated in the normal operating range for stoichiometric or slightly lean combustion, reducing fuel consumption without smoke or knock.
Accelerator pedal map
Pedal response is re-linearised: we remove the injection peaks under sudden pedal input (responsible for high instantaneous fuel consumption), without reducing the power available when you need it.
Torque distribution (low RPM)
Peak torque is shifted towards lower engine speeds. The result: you can change up to higher gears earlier, keeping the same driving comfort, but with far fewer rpm and less fuel.
Fuel rail pressure
On common rail diesel engines, the pressure in the fuel rail is optimised for fine atomisation: smaller fuel droplets burn more completely and more quickly, reducing unburnt residues.
What you actually gain
Lower fuel consumption: up to -15%
A realistic reduction confirmed under normal driving conditions. On diesel, where there is the most room for optimisation compared with the factory calibration, reductions can reach 12-15% in mixed and motorway driving. On turbo petrol engines, typical reductions are 5-10%.
At 25,000 km/year with an average fuel consumption of 7 l/100 km and diesel at 8 RON/litre, a 10% reduction means roughly 1,400 RON saved per year. The investment pays for itself quickly.
More torque at low engine speeds
The increased torque at 1,200-2,500 rpm makes the car "pull" more without pressing the pedal. You drive more relaxed, change gear less often and use less fuel.
Lower CO₂ emissions
The same engine burning less fuel = less CO₂ emitted. This is not a marketing promise, it is a direct mathematical consequence. Every litre of diesel not burnt = ~2.6 kg of CO₂ removed from the atmosphere.
A quieter, smoother engine
Optimised combustion removes engine knock, vibration at idle and harsh combustion noise, typical especially of diesel engines calibrated aggressively at the factory.
Quick payback on the investment
With the current fuel price difference in Romania, an Eco Tuning job pays for itself in 6-18 months, depending on annual mileage and engine type.
Eco Tuning is for you if...
You run a fleet
A 10% reduction on a fleet of 10 vehicles that each cover 40,000 km/year means savings of tens of thousands of RON a year. The ROI can be calculated before the work is done.
You cover long distances
Couriers, sales representatives, daily commuters: the more you drive, the faster the investment pays for itself and the larger the real monthly savings.
You drive commercial vehicles
Diesel vans (Sprinter, Transit, Ducato) and trucks respond exceptionally well to Eco Tuning: their higher fuel consumption means the absolute savings are larger too.
You drive daily in mixed traffic
Improved low-rpm torque makes driving in town and on the motorway more relaxed, with fewer gear changes and less stress on the gearbox.
You want performance and economy
Eco Tuning does not exclude performance. More torque at low engine speeds also gives a more pleasant driving experience, without sacrificing efficiency.
Diesel and turbo petrol
Eco Tuning works on both engine types, with different technical specifics. We diagnose each vehicle individually and assess the real optimisation potential before any work is done.
Diesel engines: the greatest savings potential
Diesel engines are calibrated extremely conservatively at the factory, because of the strict Euro 6 standards and the safety margins for soot and NOx. This leaves the most room for optimisation.
Typical fuel consumption reduction: 8-15%
Optimisation of pilot + main injection timing
Recalibration of common rail pressure
Torque redistribution at 1,200-2,000 rpm
Less black smoke under sudden acceleration
Less frequent DPF regeneration cycles (cleaner combustion)
Applicable: all TDI, CDI, HDi, dCi, CDTI engines
Turbo petrol engines: higher efficiency, smoother driving
TSI, TFSI, T-GDi and similar engines benefit from torque redistribution and from optimisation of the accelerator map, for more even and predictable fuel consumption in everyday use.
Typical fuel consumption reduction: 5-10%
Removal of injection "spikes" under sudden acceleration
Boost optimisation at part load
More linear pedal map → more uniform fuel consumption
More accessible torque at low engine speeds
Applicable: TSI, TFSI, T-GDi, EcoBoost, SkyActiv-G, etc.
Frequently asked questions about Eco Tuning
Does Eco Tuning damage the engine?
No. The work is done within the engine's mechanical limits: we do not change anything beyond what the physical components can handle. In fact, more complete combustion reduces soot deposits and long-term wear. The essential condition: the vehicle must be in good mechanical condition at the time of the work.
How much fuel do I save per month with Eco tuning?
It depends on mileage and engine. A concrete example: a 2.0 diesel with an average fuel consumption of 7 l/100 km, covering 2,000 km/month → current fuel consumption 140 litres/month. With a 10% reduction, you save 14 litres/month. At 8 RON/litre = 112 RON/month, that is over 1,300 RON/year, from a single software job.
Can Eco Tuning be combined with Stage 1?
Yes. There are "hybrid" versions in which we optimise both fuel consumption and performance: torque increases at low engine speeds (a double benefit: economy and pleasant driving), while peak power stays the same or slightly higher than stock. We discuss your goals and build a personalised tuning profile.
Does Eco tuning work on petrol engines too?
Yes, with the caveat that the savings potential is greater on diesel (8-15%) than on turbo petrol (5-10%). On naturally aspirated petrol engines without a turbo, the room for optimisation is minimal and we do not recommend Eco Tuning as a main service.
How long does Eco tuning take?
On average 1.5-2 hours, including diagnostics, ECU read, calibration, writing and checks. The vehicle stays with us for the whole duration of the work.
Can I go back to the original software after Eco tuning?
Yes. The original software stays in our archive with no time limit, so you can go back to the factory calibration at any time. Through the diagnostic port going back is free; if the ECU has to be removed or written on the bench or in boot mode, the labour is charged.
